What constitutes an innovative “privacy program” or, “privacy technology”?
The IAPP defines an innovative privacy program as one that is implemented by an organization for the purpose of safeguarding the privacy of consumer, supplier and/or employee data. It can cross divisions within a cost center or business unit. It need not be a "public campaign" but also can be an internal organizational plan, assessment, process, program or any combination of there of.

It can cross divisions within a cost center or business unit. It need not be a public technology, but also can be an internal organizational roll out.
Is there an entry fee for the Award Nomination?
No. The IAPP assesses no fees in connection with the nominating, judging or awards processes. The entire program is underwritten by the award sponsor, Hewlett-Packard Company.
Is the Privacy Innovation Awards an international distinction?
Yes, the IAPP encourages nominations from any and all nations, industries and sectors.
Is the Privacy Innovation Award an annual distinction?
Yes, the awards have been granted annually since 2003. The awards are presented each Fall on the occasion of that year’s IAPP Privacy Academy event.
What does the winner receive?
A distinctive marble and steel statue embossed with the award category and the name of the winning organization. This award is presented before the audience assembled at that year’s IAPP Privacy Academy. Both the event and the award receive extensive press and media coverage. Public relations efforts by the winning organization in connection with the award are encouraged though these must be coordinated with the IAPP’s own efforts. The IAPP makes every effort to inform the winning entries of their status prior to the awards presentation.
Past winners of the Privacy Innovation Award include: eBay, Inc. (U.S.); Microsoft Corporation (U.S.); The Office of the CIO for the Government of Alberta (Canada); The U.S. Postal Service; Sprint-Nextel (U.S.); IBM-Watchfire (U.S.); Voltage Security (U.S.); ATB Financial Corporation (Canada); Royal Philips Electronics (Netherlands); General Electric Company (U.S.); Eli Lilly & Company (U.S.); Novell, Inc. (U.S.); and, the California Office of Privacy Protection (U.S.).
How will the entries be judged?
Applications will be judged by a distinguished panel of privacy experts, all IAPP members, from the private and public sectors, across different industries and from around the world. Once selected, the names of judges, their titles and credentials are available for review from the Innovation Awards Judging Page.
To ensure complete objectivity in the process, judges will not be involved in reviewing or judging applications from their own organization.
All award nominations will be judged against criteria based on, among other things, the level of innovation, thought leadership and integration represented by the entry.
Who can apply for this Award?
Any private or public sector organization that meets the qualifications found in the nomination form.
Who can nominate companies for this Award?
Self-nominations are welcome. In addition, the IAPP encourages media persons, privacy experts, technology enthusiasts and other thought leaders in privacy, security and data protection to submit their nominations.

What is the Deloitte & Touche-IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award?
The Privacy Vangaurd Award is a totally separate award, not to be confused with the Privacy Innovation Award. This program recognizes a single individual privacy leader – not an organization – and all entries are evaluated by the executive committee of the board of directors of the IAPP each Fall.
